HELLO GORGEOUS!
“Hello Gorgeous!” a quote said by the famous Barbra Streisand in her ever so witty role as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Fanny was a very popular female comedian in the early 1900s who developed fame becoming one of the ever so popular Ziegfeld girls. The play focuses on the story of Fanny and how she went from a small street in Brooklyn, New York to having her name light up outside some of the world’s most renowned theaters. The show has recently been revived on Broadway and I was lucky enough to snag tickets for their 3rd night of previews. The show was a triumph and had an amazing cast, staring Beanie Feldstein, Jane lynch, Ramin Karimloo, and Jared Grimes.
The show highlighted some of the classic songs such as “If a girl isn’t pretty,” “I’m the greatest star,” and a rendition of “don’t rain on my parade.” the songs were great. Still, if you are looking for a comparison to the vocals of one Miss Streisand then you are out of luck as the songs came from more of a comedic tone. It should be noted that the dancing in this show was breathtaking, and there was even a phenomenal tap-off by the talented Jared grimes; however, the show lacked in the musical department. The instrumentals were slightly off in timing, and songs mainly were spoken, not sung. The cast does include some famous actors from Hollywood; however, it is to be determined if these same voices belong on broadway. The show did an excellent job of reeling in people emotionally. I sat next to a man hysterically crying for most of the second act; however, it seemed as if I was watching a group of people acting the roles rather than playing them. I wish I had seen more investment in the parts from the cast and better warble during solos. I look forwards to seeing the changes made throughout the previews and hope to see more and more shows back on broadway.
